Mariela Castro – what a nice face! (Reuters file photo-thank you)

Well, mama is really happy that Mariela Castro, daughter of Raul and niece of Fidel, is leading a movement against homophobia in Cuba and it’s about time, too!

What a woman to take on this very formidable problem in Cuba where gay marriage is not yet recognized.  You will read about it in the link above, so I won’t summarize here, but you know my stand on gay life and once again I will say that when the word ‘gay’ does NOT show up in articles and protests and movements, we will all be better off.

In short, when gay rights are simply not an issue.

On another subject, it seems that our universities are not turning out young people who are seeking answers to how they wish to live their lives and what philosophy they might choose to examine and perhaps follow, but instead are more preoccupied with how to make bucks.

In a wonderful article in the NYT (as usual), I read that no longer are professors in the role of mentor or role model for students, but only there at the head of class (with low attendance) to attempt to teach whatever it is they are teaching, but with very little contact with their students.  Office visits, personal interaction or even social interaction has fallen by the wayside as students become more absorbed in their IPhones, IPads and social lives than that of the classroom.  What a pity.

Mama remembers her teachers with great affection and love and feels sad for students who do not have the experiences she had so many years ago when teachers and professors were hallowed individuals, each with so much to give, so much experience to learn from.  But I’m sure there are students who will seek out an older person to answer questions or help them find their way on a sometimes rocky path.  I hope.  I certainly found a couple of mentors in mama and papa and they are always giving me good advice.

Well, giving advice, anyway.  Sometimes good, sometimes not.   As in, Loulou, do NOT eat that chicken on the counter, you hear?

Of course I listen to you! How could you think otherwise, Oh Great Queen (Watch-anthro) Of The Kitchen?
