HEADS UP, SUMMER LOVERS!

A very timely note arrived a few days ago from a reader who turned us on to James Wellbeloved, and information about summer dangers for all animals (except maybe Texas rattlesnakes – it’s humans that are THEIR danger) during the hot summer months.  Thank you, Mr. James.

Since they are not over yet, the summer months (not the rattlesnakes!), these few reminders might help you keep your furry family member cool and safe:

Always ensure that your animal has access to water in summer’s heat.  Panting is a sign that they are trying to regulate their body temp, so best to give cool water quick!

Make the garden or enclosure safe and secure,  keeping your animal in and others, out. Outdoor kitties may encounter aggressive others and suffer from bites or scratches, so check for these if your animal spends time outdoors.  Fleas and ticks abound in summer, too, so make sure your animals has his or her flea and tick protection.

Best not to have poisonous plants around to which some animals are seriously allergic.

Never leave us unattended in a car!!! Cars can heat up and really do harm.

Some light-coloured dogs are more susceptible to sunburn and might need suncream, plus accessible shade in which to cool off.  And shaving your dog’s hair in summer can lead to risk of sunburn.

Little paws respond to pathways that can heat up in summer–best to keep ON the grass or on surfaces that stay cool.

Those better not be the ones on which mama tried to fry her egg!
