Well, mama comes home from a pretty gruelling trip and this is what she finds: a GAZILLION broad beans popping off her plants and in serious need of shelling and being prepped for the freezer.
She’s about to call in the neighbors to come pick whatever they want, but I think her love of fava beans gets the best of her. She’ll distribute part of the gazillion, maybe a bazillion or a few thou around to friends and then it’s pop, pop, pop–shelling for at least an hour to get them ready for their freezer bags.
But hey, when you haven’t any in the dead of winter or even late summer and fall, there they are to steam and then toss with garlic and toasted sage, or to puree with potato, or just to have with a nice piece of pecorino (sheep’s cheese) and a glass of cool vino as a perfect aperitif.
But what happens in the garden is that mama starts picking in the early evening and cannot resist opening a few to taste during the racolte (the harvest) and so she eats one here and another there and pretty soon she has forgotten completely about dinner because these babies are filling, to say the least.
One evening she served a Japanese friend a piece of seared tuna and a rather formidable mound of “wasabi” next to it and being Japanese and very polite, he looked at his plate with trepidation but guess what? It was fava beans whipped up into a lovely green purée with mashed potato and you should have seen the look of relief on his face!!!
Mama loves funnin’ like that. She says that one day she’s going to have a dinner party and no silverware on the table, just a hammer and a screwdriver and maybe some tongs or a small wire whisk, maybe a spackle knife, things like that, just to watch what people do.
As some have said, she is her mama’s child…
I like funnin’, too. I’m about to bite the head off this nasturtium flower or
maybe I’ll sneak some of my nip into mama’s soup tonight, heh, heh.
