Nastie Business

Well, we made another picture and now it’s in!  Whew.

“Nasties” being the nickname for nasturtiums, given to them by a long-time friend of mama who, alas, is no longer with us.

I never knew her because mama met her in Los Angeles one day at a communal compost pile and she was from Texas, too, and…get this…a cheerleader at the school  that was mama’s school’s rival and where MAMA was a cheerleader.   Jeez, Louise, talk about serendipitous meetings, whatever that means.

Nasties in all their glory.

What’s a cheerleader, anyway? Do they still exist?  Sounds dinosauric to me, haha.

So – to get on with this story: Mama’s friend, Sandy, loved “nasties” and she and mama planted them all over the neighborhood.  Even now, mama carries a pocketfull of nastiurtium seeds with her in spring to tuck them here and there in the flower boxes of our little villlage, a sort of surprise treat for the town.

But right now, they are going bananas in our garden and we wanted to share their delightful beauty with you.

By the way, the leaves make wonderful pesto and the flowers, which taste like capers, go into salads or can be woven into a crown for a little princess.  Or prince, for that matter.

Just thought we’d throw this one in…kiwi flowers!  And they smell good, too.  It’s just that my nose can’t reach up that high, haha.

Seems like there’s a lot of dirty dancing in your garden, LouLou…MOL😹…I like the flowers, and the kiwi tree, holey moley, that’s a big one. We only have one little blossom, but never got any kiwi in it. Pawkisses for a Happy Day🐾😽💞

Wow – who knew? Well, Mamma took some plants home from Villelongue des Monts – but she is too lazy to cook with them – and the plants in the window box needs to be replaced – they will go to Cours Saleya to find some more! The window boxes around us are filled with geraniums and are beautiful!!!

Those nasties are pretty nice Loulou.

Several years ago one of the neighbors called our .huMom over because a hummingbird had flown into her garage and she could not get it out despite opening the big door and trying to shoo it out with a broom. (just shooing not hitting) This went on for several more minutes to no avail. Then our huMom picked up a basket of ‘sturtiums (as Piglet calls them) sitting outside and hung it on the handle of the garage door, so it hung down into the opening. Zip ! The hummy went right for all that orange goodness, and then flew off !

Loulou, The Hubby and I recently watched a cooking show, and they used nasturtium leaves; that was the first time I’d ever seen that.

My Mom LOVES “nasties” although you rarely see them in gardens here for some weird reason. They are cheery (whatever that is) and Mom loves their foliage as much as their flowers. So your Mom was a cheerleader – wow!

Hugs, Teddy
