Remnants

Uh, oh, we’re about to take the trip on which I could either be cool or throw up. That’s about the two choices I have.

But seriously, folks, I wish to comment on what I saw in the kitchen as mama cleaned out our fridge before the jaunt. I’m not sure even she knew what was in there and had a great time discovering the “small but delicious lunch” she was about to serve her guests.

That phrase came from a friend of papa’s who, when they were fairly small, ten or eleven, was invited to eat with the family and afterward said to papa’s mama, “Thank you so, so much for the small but delicious lunch.”

So that has become part of our lingo in this house and mama has prepared a “small but delicious” lunch for today.  You never know what you have on hand but I cased it out this morning when mama opened the fridge and I saw that there was a can of tuna in there that had my name on it, but she hid it from me. So this is what she found to serve them:

Leftover marinated Kenyan green beans with toasted almond dust

Caponata alla Siciliana with warm toasts

Brandade de morue with fresh pepper

Purée of artichokes with mint and garlic

Fresh white beans with toasted sage and olive oil

Roasted red peppers with her vinegar (150 year old “mother”)

Soupe de poisson

Fresh tomato soup from our tomatoes!

And a neighbor just rang the doorbell (I leapt two feet in the air from my SOUND sleep!) and gave mama fresh quince cubes to eat with Manchego.

I have a feeling we are NOT going to starve today.

At least, THEY won’t…
