Mama, could I please have a crêpe with that caramel you made yesterday?  Or maybe just brown sugar and Grand Marnier…

Hey, mama made up that title today…get it?  Soles, crêpe?  Oh, well.

Today in France everyone eats crêpes, but the religious holiday is called La Chandeleur.

It is the day when Jesus was presented…well, just click on the link because it’s a heckuva lot more interesting than what you’ll read here in a few lines!

Mama and papa left me ALONE and went to a friend’s house where mama made pancakes filled with ham and cheese, and then sweet pancakes filled with caramel or brown sugar and sprinkled with Grand Marnier.  Mama says that commercial crêpes will never taste like homemade.  Hey, just the melted butter sizzling in the pan is enough to make me salivate.

SO I guess we don’t get any more until next February, sigh…

Wait a minute, I haven’t been out to see the groundhog yet!!! What am I doing?  See you later…

La Chandeleur is not celebrated in Switzerland, but Claire loves crêpes and galettes, and your post makes her want to eat some ! Purrs

I do like celebrations that have food attached to them or small furry rodents, MOL
Heres hoping we get 40 good days of sun rather than 40 more of rain.

I was not aware of these saying around La Chandeleur. Some of them are rather nasty. We had lots of rain here in Burgundy and I think you in the South had your fair share.

Here is a well-known saying which we fear because of the threat it casts on our Summer:

“S’il pleut à la Saint Médard (early June) il pleuvra pendant 40 jours, à moins que Saint Barnabé (3 days later) ne vienne tout arranger.”

Wow – we didn’t know it was a religious holiday thing but our friends invited us over – for crepes last night! They were going to leave me at home but it was storming and the electricity went out – but came back on and they didn’t want me to be afraid. HA – Mya the Doberman (I exaggerate) afraid of a storm and the dark? Mama carried me and papa held the umbrella. You think maybe I’m spoiled? We had sarasin crepes with indian filling – YUMMMM! Mama sneaked me a couple of bits. Did they at least bring you a “doggie bag”?

I just read the link, which answered all my questions. Wonder how we in the US got Groundhog Day out of it ? It’s also known as Candlemas Day : “Half your wood and half your hay/
You must have by Candlemas Day.”
meaning the winter is really only half over !

What holiday are the ceremonial crepes made for ? Over here it will be maple syrup season in a few weeks – but not yet. Warm days get the sap running and the cold nights keep it from getting “buddy” (where it tastes funny because the tree is starting to get ready to bud.) Right now it is to be above freezing for about 5 days, but first everything has to thaw out from sub-zero.
We are all just hoping the ice melts before the next storm hits.
