High C

Oh, boy, do I love music. When mama and papa go out, they leave the Italian radio station on the TV and I only want music from the Auditorium, which is classical, and lots of opera, too. Sometimes jazz, but not too often…

Mama just read to me about Javier Camarena, the Mexican tenor, who was standing in for another singer at the Met and who got a huge ovation and an ENCORE, which has happened only twice before because encores are prohibited (a great idea in my book, because after having heard a 2-3 hour opera, one really wants to get up and go home and revel in the experience—if it was a reveling sort of experience, that is!), and if you’d like to read about him and hear this lovely voice, you’ll find it here:

The thing I love about opera is that it goes right to the bottom of your paws and just takes hold of your heart and makes it go faster. These new singers are really making me stay awake and take notice (that first thing, I don’t do so often but…) and there is another Peruvian singer, Juan Diego Flórez who also makes my kitty tears start up.

I guess I’m used to old Pavarotts, as we called him fondly, and there was never going to be anyone like him again, but of course, someone else comes along every now and then and knocks your pattes off. But when Pavarotti sang, we all three cried here in the living room with the sound way up and the house filled with “Che gelida manina“, which has to be one of the most stirring arias of all time. So then when I heard Jonas Kauffman, who can also hit a few notes, I thought, well, these new kids on the block are really going to make it hard to choose who was best.

But then mama put on a cd of Caruso and we all cried again and said, oh, boy, maybe he was the top banana after all.

But who can choose? If you listen to all four, I’m pretty sure you’ll cry four times.

Hmm…I think I love them all, each in his own way.
