I’m not sure I even want to read over mama’s shoulder anymore, not with the news of yesterday and today—a horrendous anti-abortion law in Texas (where mama is from but she has nothing to do with that kind of thinking or legislation!) and now the ‘not guilty’ decision for Zimmerman who did, indeed, shoot an unarmed teenager but was acquitted by a jury of six women (one of whom is a minority). What is half the jury had been black and half white (sort of like me)? Forgive me if I lean a certain way, but I’m against guns, too.

But… if you are walking down a street and a suspicious person in his car calls the police to come check you out, what is the motive? He doesn’t like your looks? Your clothes?  Zimmerman had no proof that Trayvon was up to no good.  A young man was walking to his father’s fiance’s apartment. Period. He had no gun. Zimmerman did. And if you use a gun, in this kitty’s view, and it kills someone, you have murdered that victim and should pay for it. Self-defense? Why was Zimmerman bothering this kid at all? What if this kid had been white? Or…Hispanic?

I’m a mostly black kitty. Black anything gets a bad rap. Black cats get a bad rap. Black individuals get a bad rap and have lived with prejudice and injustice in their lives for centuries. If a black me crosses someone’s path, he wants to go the other way, for no sane reason, only some old kitty’s tale that we black cats are bad luck. Why not Persians or Tabby’s or Abyssinians?

What would have happened if Zimmerman had simply left this kid alone to walk home? He had no right to confront this young man. Neighborhood watch notwithstanding, it would have been far wiser to “stand down” as he was told to do (he did not) and to let the police query the young man and determine what he was doing, if it was any business of theirs. In Florida, however, who can tell…?

How many “neighborhood watch” members are now going to feel they can stop and accost anyone who looks suspicious to them? Some neighborhood!

On me, ebony and ivory are in perfect harmony (to quote that wonderful Stevie Wonder/Paul Mc Catney, I mean, Mc Cartney song). On me, black and white like yin and yang live and work together just fine. Why can’t anthros do the same?

There is such a sense of injustice about this trial that there is no telling where this might lead. The jurors were asked to be interviewed, they tell me, and would not do it. Were they afraid to sentence Zimmerman? Are they going to have to live in fear from now on.  A possibility, but the legal system is the legal system and all systems have flaws.

Too many anthros of all colors will be watching their backs after this decision, Zimmerman most of all.

As for the Texas decision, I happen to be a spayed kitty and I’m proud of it but frankly, I’m glad my kitty friends who aren’t fixed yet do not live in Texas.

A female anthro’s body is her own and does not belong to the Texas legislature, the US government or anyone else.

Perhaps they should start legislating vasectomies…
