Well, mama has been reading Anna Karenina (after many years, I think)  to me and I have to say, I sort of began to snooze off after a few chapters (and they’re SHORT) and have dreams of samovars and vodka and fancy dress balls and wonder where the kitties are in this scenario.

Well, there is a Kitty.  But she’s an anthro and one of the main characters and I don’t see any mention of other kitties anywhere and this Kitty loses in love to Anna and therein lies the story that goes on for…well…quite a few pages. But still no kitties.

Maybe Russians preferred bears, no?

But mama finally got to the end after zipping through on her IPad and going over all the history of Alexander I and Napoleon and several wars (War and Peace was in the same download!) and I’m just about ready for Cat Fancy or Modern Cat Magazine.  I’m not so sure I can digest all this Toilstoy, er, I mean, Tolstoy that easily.  I think for the end of summer mama ought to lighten up on the literature and have one of those good summer reads that people talk about all the time.  No brainers, I think they’re called.  Or maybe not exactly that, but you know, those books that are great fun to get into and that you can’t put down because you have some time to actually READ with leisure and don’t feel obligated to finish if you don’t want to and so you have other ones around just in case?

I think she has a list of those, too, so maybe we’ll start on the new Donna Leon mystery or mama will pull something out of her hat to surprise me and now that the summer is almost over, we’ll both curl up on the bed with papa of an evening and get some serious reading underway.  Funny, someone said to mama the other day, “I can only read in the summer–when fall is here, I just don’t have the time.”

But I think mama would find the time no matter what.  But I think she may just be pretending to read, because she really likes the feel of me curled up under her arm and reading is just an excuse.  War and Peace, here we come!
