This ungodly wind is still blowing my fur in the wrong direction, so I’m reading the IHT and find myself cheering for Adela, otherwise known as José Augustín Hernández, a transsexual who has just been elected to an office in Cuba! Being gay in Cuba is not easy. I know that because mama and papa took a trip when they sold their bakery and went straight to Havana under the ruse of a ‘religious’ pilgrimage, but the whole group finked out and they went alone—no leader, no group, just they and their rented car with which they picked up hitchhikers all down the island and had great adventures with all and it was clear that along the Malecón, the gays were wary of being there, which is their only place to congregate. But mama and papa did not meet Adela, sad to say. Now that would have been a rich adventure. A spokesperson for gay and transsexual rights, Adela has opened the door “for others to walk through.” I love this person. I love stories like this, and you may not know it, but there are gay kitties, too, and they have their rights! I’m not gay, but being ‘fixed’, I don’t even have a whole lot of urge to go messin’ around with the neighborhood studs, but I am definitely an advocate for gay rights, women’s rights, any (excuse the expression) underdog who suffers from the deeds and decisions of narrow-minded homophiles who have never taken the time to find out about differences in humankind.
So, okay, I’m on a soap box, but if kitties can’t speak out against prejudice, then who can?
