Not in the cards today…

Oh, boy, well, it was mama who had those clammy hands today!

Five people for lunch, to whom she had promised (my favorite!) spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams) and for several weeks saw one of the guests anticipating this pasta, practically drooling, along with us, at the mention of it, did not get their lunch order filled.

This morning, off mama goes to our little fish market—make that BIG fish market—and comes home with 2 kilos of small clams because the coques were “off”, said the fish man…should have known then that this would not work out. And home mama comes and throws the clams into wonderfully garlic-scented olive oil with a little hot pepper and oh, boy!!!

EVEN I HIT THE DOOR! I was outta there faster than a Jack Russell could dig a mole and I couldn’t go back in the kitchen until mama had double-bagged those babies and papa had banished them to the garage until garbage pick up in the morning.

I’m not sure they’re going to PICK UP our garbage with those suckers in it.

I think I’ll go out there and spray a little Dog-Off or something on the sack so that they’ll be tolerable until morning. Maybe some of mama’s Bellodgia…haha. Papa would really appreciate that since he searches the world for that perfume.

Just kidding.

Meanwhile, mama was on the phone toute de suite with the fish store and gave them a small piece of her mind, attempting to be polite but letting them know that in one hour she would have to change the menu and feed five people

Lucky mama—she keeps salmon eggs in the fridge for emergencies and when you toss them with melted butter, olive oil and a little water from the boiled spaghetti, you have a lunch fit for a kitty!!!

Our neighbor, who was climbing up a ladder to hand mama a bucket of fresh-dug potatoes from his garden, overheard the disaster and said, “DON’T eat shellfish in the summer!” Which has to be a thing everyone knows around here but there are sure a lot of moules/frittes on most of the menus in restaurants. Mussels steamed with a little wine, crispy French fries, what’s not to like?

But mama has put away her clam diggers for the summer…and that’s that.

Into the trash!!! What a shame…

And I can’t get that clam juice off my paws!!! What a smell! Wish I hadn’t stuck my paw into the pot–it was an accident…
